Silver Spring Fire Department Volunteers and Life Safety Unit have been out and about in the neighborhood distributing smoke detectors and performing home safety checkups.
SSFD’s Life Safety Unit (LSU), is the first all-volunteer unit of its kind in the state. The LSU focuses efforts on improving home safety for at risk populations including older adults and individuals with disabilities. The program includes an extensive public information campaign as well as home safety checkups. We install smoke alarms, hearing impaired smoke alarms, and carbon monoxide detectors by appointment and periodic door to door campaigns in neighborhoods that have needy populations.
Our Life Safety Unit also teaches car seat installation, baby sitter first aid and CPR. We host community CPR classes at churches and civic associations as well as CPR classes for other volunteer and career fire departments. We were the first department in the state to receive a FEMA grant to support this work. If you are interested in volunteering in the Life Safety Unit please contact us at email@example.com
