Silver Spring units were dispatched at 1345 hours today to a fire in the Nicaro restaurant at 8229 Georgia Ave. On arrival units found heavy smoke from the roof line on the alpha side of the structure.
Engine 701 handled Division 1. With assigned resources they pulled the ceiling and found fire overhead attacking the roof line. They began a knockdown of this fire using Class A foam.
Truck 701 went to the roof and with assigned resources was able to cut away the roof area at the alpha side of the building. The Roof Division removed a portion of the decorative parapet to expose hidden fire from below.
Engine 716 was assigned as the Exposure Group and handled both the Bravo and Delta exposures. Some smoke was found in Exposure Bravo 2. Inspection holes were made in ceilings of both Bravo exposures and the Delta exposure to ensure that there was no extension.
Luis Martinez, owner of the restaurant, reported that he arrived at work earlier in the morning to start preparation for the evening opening. Around noon he went out to run erraneds.. On his return he reported smelling something burning, but could not see smoke or fire. He then called 911. The dispatcher, while getting information from him instructed him to leave the building; as he exited the front door he observed fire in the front decorative parapet on the alpha side.
Montgomery County Police Dept. was required to control north bound Georgia Ave. traffic. They established a road block at Silver Spring Ave. Electric and gas utilities were on the scene to isolate the structure. FM 50 and 54 were called to conduct an investigation to determine origin and cause.
Chief 701 was the IC.

Fire caused consierable damage to the Nicaro restaurant. The owner smelled smoke and when he exited the front door observed smoke and fire showing from the decorative parapet at the alpha/bravo corner.
