1980-while attending the Univ Maryland,University College STAFF COMMAND COURSE I was accomodated at Silver Springs Fire Dept.I met Curtis Woolridge a fire fighter who responded with myself in the crew from Silver Sprngs Fire Station in amutual aid response in Montgomery County to a three rose apartment block that was well involved in fire. Possibly Curtis would no longer be a volunter and possibly moved on. Nut they are fond memories of my time spent in maryland. I returned in 1991 to attend Chief Ismans funeral. I again returned in 2003 to attend Symnposium at Ntl Fire Academy. My last visit to US was to Chicago IAFC Conference where I met up with Chief
Glen Gaines who sadly passed away only months later. Both were close friends and I miss them greatly. Best Wishes, Len Carter.

My family lived in Silver Spring from 1940 till my brother passed away in 2006. When we were kids, our mailman was a volunteer fireman One day he gave us a tour of the firehouse on Georgia Avenue. Even after all these years, it was a day I will never forget. Thank you.

Our family is glad to be able to count on prompt service from the SSVFD! I called them after my CO alarm went off. They were here in five minutes and reassured us it was a false alarm and advised changing the alarms. Thanks SSVFD!

My Dad was the first paid Fireman at SSVFD. His title back then was Custodian. When he was appointed to the Wash. D.C. Fire Dept. in 1941, and Preston Wheeler took his position at Silver Spring. I would like top thank the anniversary committee for the invitation to the wonderful 100th Anniversary event held in June. It was a class 1 event and it was so nice to see many people from my past. I played softball for many years for Hillandale and say may guys that played for THE BIG RED MACHINE, who by the way we beat from time to time. Thanks again guys and gals, for a GREAT event.

My name is Steve Brandt. My Dad was the first paid firefighter at Station #1 for the SSVFD. I think it was around 1938 or 39. His title was Custodian. He was appointed to DCFD in 1941 and if I'm not mistaken Preston Wheeler replaced him at 1 Engine. I was invited to the Banquet on June 6th and was really impressed with the affair. I commend everyone who had a hand in organizing this event. It was without a doubt a Class A and very enjoyable evening. Got to see a lot of old acquaintances and a number of "BIG RED MACHINE" softball players who, as a player for Hillandale, had the opportunity to beat on occasion. The only thing better than beating Sandy Spring, was beating Silver Spring. I talked with Jim Dalton Sat night and we both agreed that those were really great times. I spent many hours around the "Old time members" of the SSVFD. The place to be on Sunday afternoon was POP DEITLES in Montgomery Hills. Thanks again for a GREAT evening and the wonderful stroll down Memory Lane.

Comments:

This thank you is way belated, but I just saw the guestbook option on your site as I was making our annual donation. My wife and I wanted to thank you for the prompt, courteous, and efficient help we received from your EMS service on the night of July 25, 2014. Getting my wife quickly to the Holy Cross emergency room proved to be very important both for our peace of mind and the ultimate physical healing from her fall that night. It turned out that everything was fine and that my wife has fully healed.

Thanks again for responding.

On September 14, I experienced an emergency near the Silver Spring shopping area. A passerby called 911, and very quickly the ambulance arrived. I was attended to very professionally and extremely courteously by two responders as I was transported to Holy Cross Hospital. Because my condition was such that I was not totally clear-headed, I was unable to note and recall the names of those two gentlemen, and I was hoping for a way to thank them personally for everything they did on that occasion. I hope that this message will find its way to those two persons; even if it doesn't, however, I would like to express by gratitude to all EMTs and responders for the excellent work you do. Thank you!

Very thorough and interesting web site. Originally from SS, and my Dad was a member of SSVFD in the 40s and 50s, (Dana B. Johannes). Spent many a day with him when I was a young boy, mostly at the Four Corners station. Looked forward to the Fire Prevention Days when the kids could ride on the trucks, especially fun when my Dad was driving us. "Maggie" was my favorite truck. Went on to become a vol. fireman myself with a small dept. in suburb of Asheville, NC for 15 yrs. Enjoyed every second of it, as my Dad did with SSVFD. Stay safe.

My Dad is a past chief to Silver Spring way back when. He had a good part of all his famiily involved in some way. Lots of fond memories of this dept. I, as well as my Mom and sister were part of the charter members of the auxilliary, a great group. I am now proud to say that my Dad had a great influence on my sons and two are now very involved in the Grinnell Fire Dept as well as one of my Grandsons. My Dad was a very well known and very repected man by anyone he knew.
Keep up the good work you all manage to do.

Hello, I was in search of a old 1929 American LaFrance fire engine, name "Maggie". There is a picture in your web site with Pine Level lettering on it. We together share the apparatus for that around 1953 it was used here in Pine Level. The history has it going back to your department. If anyone has any information on this please contact me at my email address or phone. Thanks
